While the entire Brisbane Lions AFLW team is finding their momentum in a disrupted season, here’s five players we think you need to keep an eye out for this weekend.
Tahlia Hickie #2
While she might have announced herself to the AFLW competition in 2021, a career best performance in Round 3 sees Tahlia Hickie staring down the barrel of an even bigger 2022.
A dominant performance against Carlton saw Hickie smash her personal record and make 34 hitouts, with 12 of those to advantage and three clearances.
That puts her right up there among the competition’s best, recording the second-highest number of hit-outs behind Erin McKinnon and Emma King’s shared record of 39.
Going on to back it up with another 18 hit-outs and four clearances in the Lions win over Collingwood, Hickie has given Lions’ fans a glimpse of what’s still to come for her 2022 season.
Jade Ellenger #5
Jade Ellenger has grabbed her 2022 season with both hands, making the most of every opportunity to put forward some of her best football to date.
Straight out of the gates in Round 1, Ellenger gathered a career-best 16 disposals against a dominant Adelaide side.
Just 9 days later, the 21-year-old went to notch up seven marks, five tackles and two goals against Carlton.
Having already showcased her run and carry alongside her ability to impact the scoreboard, Ellenger looks set for a big second half of the 2022 season.
Greta Bodey #15
While she often flies under the radar, the impact of Greta Bodey isn’t one to be underestimated.
The key forward has managed to find plenty of ball in the 2022 season, hitting the scoreboard four times over just three games for the Lions.
A memorable goal in Round 3 against Carlton saw Bodey rewarded for effort with a Goal of the Year nomination.
While the 26-year-old’s performance against Collingwood was one of her strongest so far, gathering 15 possessions (5 contested), seven tackles, one goal and a career-high four marks.
As the former soccer player hits her stride, Lions fans should keep a close eye on number 15 in this weekend’s clash against St Kilda.
Courtney Hodder #21
Lions’ fans will know her as the excitement machine with a freakish goal kicking talent, but this season we’re seeing a different side to Courtney Hodder.
Already a dynamic forward, Hodder’s defensive pressure has been a critical part of her game in 2022.
In a hard win against a surging Geelong, Hodder made seven tackles and three intercepts, with nearly all of her possessions contested.
When you combine her defensive pressure with her X-Factor in front of goal, Hodder is shaping up as an exciting prospect for the second half of the 2022 season.
Jesse Wardlaw #30
Jesse Wardlaw is another Lion that’s putting together a career-best season.
The 22-year-old has been steadily building over the past three seasons and looks set to explode in 2022, already producing standout games for the Lions in Rounds 3 and 4.
Gathering 12 disposals (six contested), three marks, and four score involvements, Wardlaw put up a strong performance against a fighting Geelong side.
She then went on to back it up the following weekend with 12 disposals (seven contested) and five score involvements in the Lions’ 24-point win over Collingwood.
If her recent form is anything to go by, there’s plenty of excitement still to come from the tall forward.
