Brisbane Lions ruckman Ben Hudson has announced his retirement from AFL football after 161 games in nine seasons.

Hudson, who turns 34 in February, delayed his retirement at the end of 2011 by joining the Lions as a ‘back-up’ senior ruckman.

His recruitment proved to be a masterstroke, as an early-season Achilles injury to Matthew Leuenberger saw Hudson step up to play 18 games for the Lions in 2012 - far more than he, and the Club, had anticipated.

Hudson said that he had thoroughly enjoyed his brief time at the Lions and the opportunity to extend his playing career in his home state of Queensland.

“I’ve had a great year at the Brisbane Lions and I’m very grateful to the Club for giving me the opportunity to play this game that I love for another year,” Hudson said.

“Now I’m looking forward to watching from the stands. There’s no doubt that there’s a very talented young group at the Club and I’m looking forward to seeing the success that is around the corner.”

“I look forward to remaining in the football industry in some capacity in the years to come.”

General Manager, Football Operations, Dean Warren, said that Hudson had been one of the Club’s most valuable recruits.

“Although Ben’s time at the Lions was very short, his positive attitude, on-field leadership and sense of humour will be missed by the playing group and staff alike.”

“We wish him nothing but the best in the next stage of his life.”
