AFLW Captain Bre Koenen is looking forward to a tough contest when the Brisbane Lions face Hawthorn at Skybus Stadium on Saturday night.

With Hawthorn eight games into their first AFLW season, Koenen is excited at the prospect of facing an entirely new opponent in Round 9.

“It’s the first time in our history we’ve ever played Hawthorn and I think it’ll be a good contest,” Koenen said.

“They’ve got a few really impressive young guns, so I’m hoping it’ll be a tight competition come Saturday.

“Hopefully we can go down to Melbourne and finish the season strongly, we’re just looking for an all-round performance.”

When it comes to all round performances this season, Koenen has been a leader for the Lions on and off the field, with the 27 year old pulling together one of her strongest seasons to date.

Currently sitting 5th in the competition for marks (35), and 8th for intercepts (56), the key defender has been played a key role in the Lions’ back six this season.

Friday night’s clash against Adelaide ranked among Koenen’s strongest performances for the season, gathering a career-high 15 disposals, as well as nine intercepts and five marks.

“I think it’s maybe just having a season under my belt as Captain,” Koenen said.

“I know what to expect and how much I need to give to others. I’m probably prioritising myself and my preparation a little bit more as well.

“I think I’ve found that balance a little bit better this season.”

Saturday evening’s clash is the Lions’ final home and away season match fixtured in Melbourne with the Lions due to play Round 10 back in Queensland.

Koenen urged Victorians to make the most of the Saturday evening fixture and get along to Skybus Stadium.

“We love our Victorian fans,”

“To get a good turnout this weekend would be really special, and who knows, it might be the last time we play in Melbourne this season.”

The Brisbane Lions will play Hawthorn on Saturday October 22 at 7:10pm AEDT (6:10PM AEST) at Skybus Stadium, VIC.
