The Brisbane Lions have locked in 19 of its AFLW players for 2023, including the nucleus of last season’s Grand Final team.

Captain Bre Koenen and reigning AFLW Best and Fairest Ally Anderson headline the exciting group committed to helping the Lions experience future success.

Among the loyal Lions who are All In for Season Eight include 2021 Premiership players Nat Grider, Orla O’Dwyer, Cathy Svarc, Shannon Campbell, Dakota Davidson, Tahlia Hickie, Jade Ellenger and Taylor Smith.

Lions AFLW Head Coach, Craig Starcevich, said the Lions’ playing group was taking shape for an exciting season ahead.

“Given the current environment, to have a large group recommit to the Club is exciting because it shows a lot of faith in what we have built as a foundation team in the AFLW,” he said.

“Over the last couple of seasons players have had the opportunity to consider the strength of the program they're in against the extra remuneration on offer at the newer clubs.

“It's pleasing the large majority, 19 of them at this stage, continue to make sound football decisions.”

Also on the list is the exciting talent of Dee Heslop, Mikayla Pauga, Zimmorlei Farquharson and Lily Postlethwaite, along with foundation player Sharni Webb.

They are joined by rookies Bella Smith, Charlotte Mullins, Kiara Hillier and Ella Smith.

Add to that the signing of new Irish recruit Jennifer Dunne.

“We have kept a large group who have already gained valuable experience playing in two grand finals in the past three seasons,” said Starcevich.

“This sentiment has been led by Club captain Bre Koenen, the league's reigning best and fairest player in Ally Anderson, and our dynamic midfielder Cathy Svarc who had significant interest elsewhere.

“These types of players foster a winning culture in the group and inspire others to follow.

“We're looking forward to more signing announcements over the next week and are excited about the new players we intend to add to our group."
