The Brisbane Lions remain undefeated in the VFL for season 2023 after an emphatic 83-point victory over the GWS Giants.
This continues the Lions winning streak as they look toward a bye this weekend to rest and rejuvenate before their next test against Carlton at Ikon Park in Round 7.
The Lions travelled to Blacktown International Sportspark for their Round 5 clash with the Giants.
After strong wins over Collingwood and Southport, the Lions looked to make it five wins on the trot coming up against a rested Giants outfit.
A blistering-start, which saw three goals kicked in seven minutes, set the tone for VFL Head Coach Ben Hudson’s men.
Wylie Buzza and Tom Fullerton opened their accounts in the early onslaught as both went on to kick five goals apiece for the match.
A seven-goal opening term ensured the Lions would hold a healthy 21-point lead at the quarter time.
Back-to-back Noah Answerth goals along with Buzza’s second and majors from Kai Lohmann and Nakia Cockatoo demonstrated the Lions’ appetite for scoring.
The Lions star-studded midfield went to work early in the contest.
Deven Robertson was enormous backing up an impressive outing against Southport with 29 disposals, seven tackles and a goal.
Answerth was huge around the ground collecting 24 touches along with six clearances and eight tackles, backed up Rhys Mathieson who once again had a day out.
Mathieson finished with 32 disposals, his third consecutive game over 30 touches, topped off by eight clearances.
The Giants kicked the last goal of the first term and the opening major of the second to keep within striking distance of the Lions.
Each side traded goals, the Lions, through Harry Sharp and Tahj Abberley before Buzza and Fullerton’s kicked their third to close out a five goal to three quarter in Brisbane’s favour.
The third quarter rained goals for the Lions, booting five unanswered majors in 25 minutes of play to put the game beyond the Giants reach.
Fullarton kicked his fourth, while goals to Robertson, Blake Coleman, Kyle Dunkley and Lohmann’s second, opened an unassailable lead.

Jimmy Tunstill scored his only major of the morning to end the third term and would finish with one of his best outings in Lions colours.
Tunstill had 30 touches, seven clearances and five marks to go along with his goal, and he was aided by returning ruckman Darcy Fort who dominated.
Fort ruled the ruck contest for the entire match finishing with 28 hitouts, nine clearances and a goal to stake claim for another best on ground performance.
The final term belonged to the Lions who slotted another five goals thanks to Shadeau Brain, Fullerton, Fort and two from Buzza.
The Lions defence stood tall throughout the contest with Harry Arnold and Ryan Lester showing aerial dominance, while Jaxon Prior and Callum Ah Chee were lively off half-back.
Lohmann and Cockatoo provided reliable options up forward creating contests and applying pressure to not allow the Giants easy access out of their back half.
The win continues the Lions unbeaten run to start the season as they head into their first bye for season 2023.
