The Brisbane Lions VFL side for the second week in a row have lost by less than a goal, going down to Geelong at Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday afternoon.
With neither side gaining much of an advantage across the four quarter, it was the Cats two goals inside the first five minutes of the fourth quarter which proved the difference.
Both sides traded a goal inside the opening five minutes of the first term with the Lions gaining the ascendency late in the quarter to take a game high 10-point lead into the first break.
Two goals from Jack Manly and Kalin Lane gave the Lions the early spoils but it was through the midfield where the damage was being done.
Bruce Reville had one of his best games in Lions colours, finishing with 24 touches, six tackles, seven marks and a goal to be one of Brisbane’s best.
Draftee Reece Torrent was also eye-catching in the opening quarter, having 22 disposals and six clearances for the afternoon
The Cats came out swinging in the second term booting four goals to two to hold a three-point lead at half-time.
Goals to Brandon Ryan and Kyle Dunkley ensured the Lions stayed within striking distance as the game descending into a contested battle.
The Lions defence, who were tested throughout the contest were solid, Jaxon Prior, Shadeau Brain and Darragh Joyce leading the way.
Prior and Brain had 25 and 17 disposals respectively off half-back, while Joyce enjoyed nine marks, along with Brain to quell the Cats attacking soirees.
Momentum swung back into the Lions favour late in third term thank to debutant Rohan Bailey, Reville and Harry Sharp.
A seven-point lead at three-quarter time was again due to dominance around the stoppage with Ewan Macpherson impacting 10 clearances, a game-high, while outside runners Harry Sharp and Dunkley were also influential.
Two early goals to Geelong in the fourth term put the Lions immediately on the back foot and were unable to hit the front again.
Back-to-back losses for the Lions have them sitting at two wins and two losses for the season with their next challenge a trip to Southport to take on the Sharks in Round 5.
