Former Maroochydore QAFL player, Zach Carlson has been named in the Brisbane Lions Wheelchair AFL team becoming the clubs first ‘father-son’ signing for Australia’s newest para-sport.
Zach, who became a paraplegic in 2018 after suffering a spinal injury, is the son of Darren Carlson, who played 25 games with the Brisbane Bears from 1987 – 1990.
Lions Captain/Coach and former Paralympian, Michael Dobbie-Bridges PLY said the Lions were looking forward to the two match series against the SUNS.
“The Lions AFL squad have won two from two this season and we’re looking to do the guernsey proud and do the same.
“AFL Wheelchair gives people with and without a disability the opportunity to play footy and like any club, meet new people, ensure we’re getting out, getting active and supporting our mates.
“It’s great to see the Lions and AFL Queensland support this program and it’d be great to have a few fans cheering us on at Nissan Arena on Sunday.”
Michael who has been at the forefront of developing Wheelchair AFL said he was proud of the legacy he has played a role in creating.
“The kids who always had to sit on the sidelines and watch their brothers and sisters running out and playing will now have the same opportunities as their siblings.”
New recruit, Zach Carlson, said he couldn’t wait to don the maroon, blue and gold this Sunday.
“This has been my first full season of wheelchair AFL. It’s been a privilege to play with Morningside for the season, and to be elevated to the Lions squad is a proud moment for myself.
“It’s been great to have the support of dad there at each game, as well as an extra set of eyes in the stands to let me know where I could be finding little improvements in my game. He has some great knowledge of the game so it’s an asset to have. He’s just as excited as I am for this series, so it’s great support to have.
“The competition has been incredibly competitive to date, so I can’t wait to turn it up even more for the Q-Clash series.”
