NBL Club Brisbane Bullets and the Brisbane Lions have a lot more in common than meets the eye.

The two codes met on centre court after the Bullets’ training session this morning, swapping balls and showing, or rather attempting, off their skills.

Lions players Archie Smith, Dan McStay and Tom Cutler, all huge basketball fans, played Reuben Te Rangi, Shaun Bruce and Tom Fullarton in a friendly game of three on three, along with a couple of other skill games.

“It was really cool to have them down here, playing basketball with us and kicking the footy. It was a good experience,” Fullarton told lions.com.au.

The 18-year-old, in his first year of NBL, grew up playing football on the Sunshine Coast and was a member of the Lions Academy. Like Archie Smith, he showed incredible talent in two sports and ultimately had to make a choice. Unlike Smith, he chose basketball.

“I only stopped playing about three years ago now,” Fullarton said.

“Footy is still pretty close to my heart. I’ll always follow the Lions. I was in the Lions Academy for three years as a junior, so I will look up to them and follow them.”

For Smith, it was the reverse. A promising junior basketball player he took a chance and converted to AFL and has never looked back. But still, basketball holds a dear place in his heart.

His father Andre Moore, a former NBA player, played for the Bullets between 1990-94.

“The Club plays a part in my existence, with my Dad coming over from America to play for them,” Smith said.

“I love them and can’t wait to watch them this weekend.”

Fullarton went head to head with fellow big man Smith this morning and says he’s still got it.

“He’s pretty athletic. He can get up and dunk it. I’m sure he’d go alright at basketball if he wanted to,” he said.

Cutler and McStay also showed promise.  

“Yeah they’re pretty good, pretty athletic. They can move well and shoot the ball well. I feel like the skills translate pretty well in different sports.”

All enjoyed the experience, especially being able to play sport in air conditioning.

"This is awesome. Definitely a lot better than being out in the 30 degree heat at the moment,” Smith said.

“Checking out what they do, they are a very talented Club and I have followed them since they returned a couple of years ago.”

The Bullets meet Melbourne United this Saturday at Boondall.
