Mitch Robinson has elevated himself into truly elite company within the Lions family after an equal career-best 20 contested possessions in Saturday’s Round 6 clash with the GWS Giants in Sydney.

Robinson became just the seventh Lions player to top 20 contested possessions in a game since the statistic was introduced to the AFL in 1999.

The others have been the much-decorated Simon Black (7 times), Tom Rockliff (5), Dayne Beams (2), Michael Voss (1), Luke Power (1) and Dayne Zorko (1).

Black holds the club record in this statistic after his astonishing performance in the 2003 Grand Final, when he had a career-best 39 possessions, including 25 contested possessions, plus nine tackles, nine clearances and a goal to win the Norm Smith Medal.

In a pointer to how much the game has changed in 15 years, Black played 100% game time in the Lions 50-point win over Collingwood to complete a 2001-02-03 premiership hat-trick.

Even more staggering is the fact that five teammates also played every minute of the grand final -m – Jonathan Brown, Alastair Lynch, Shaun Hart, Chris Johnson and Nigel Lappin.

Black also had one game in which he had 21 contested possessions, and six of 20 contested possessions.

Rockliff has the second and third-best contested possession games, with 23 against Gold Coast in Round 1 last year and 22 in 2014. He’s also had three games of 21 contested possessions.

Beams had a career-best 21 contested possessions against Adelaide at the Gabba last year after two games of 20 contested possessions – one for Brisbane in 2015 and one for Collingwood in 2012.

Zorko had 22 possessions in a game in 2014, Voss’ best was 21 in 2003, and Power had 20 contested possessions in a game in 2009.

Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield and Sydney’s Josh Kennedy share the AFL game record for most contested possessions in a game at 29, ahead of Chris Judd, then playing with West Coast, and Sydney’s Jude Bolton at 28.

Robinson’s typically hard-at-it effort against Giants, which went with 28 possessions, nine clearances and six tackles, equalled his career-best haul for contested possessions.  He also had 20 contested possessions in his 72nd game for Carlton in 2013.

His 20 contested possessions was twice as many as any other Lions player – Allen Christensen and Cam Rayner had 10 each – and was 16% of the team total of 123.

The 28-year-old 154-gamer leads the Lions in contested possessions this season and ranks 28th in the League overall. Next best for Brisbane is Stefan Martin. His 9.0 average ranks equal 77th overall.

Robinson also is second in average possessions for the Lions this season at 23.6, behind only skipper Beams (24.8), and is ranked 52nd in the League. Beams is 40th overall and Alex Witherden (23.5) is equal 53rd.

Debutant Oscar McInerney also went into the Brisbane record books as the equal tallest player in club history, joining former Lions ruckmen Cameron Wood and Trent Knobel and ex-Brisbane Bears ruckman Ian Kidgell, who played three games in 1991.

All are officially recorded at 203cm, one centimetre taller than Matthew Leuenberger, Beau McDonald and Eric Hipwood.

The tallest player in Fitzroy history is officially Dean Farnham, who played 17 games in 1974-75. He was 206cm.

Peter Ellis, a Queenslander who played seven games for Fitzroy in 1969-71, was 203cm.

Also on Saturday Lions deputy vice-captain Harris Andrews had 13 one-percenters. Now with 62 from six games this season, he ranks second in the League in this defensive statistic behind Port Adelaide’s Dougal Howard (66).
