IT'S AN unlikely match, but Brisbane Lions skipper Tom Rockliff has turned to business guru Mark Bouris in an attempt to improve his leadership.

Rockliff recently met the Wizard Home Loans founder and Celebrity Apprentice host in Sydney.

Entering his second season as captain, Rockliff said 2015 was a huge learning curve and he wanted to leave no stone unturned in search of improvement.

Aside from his business success, Bouris is a board member of NRL club the Sydney Roosters, and gave Rockliff plenty of ideas he could use personally and in a team setting.

"He's big on meditation, so that will be something I'll look to do in the future just to get away from footy," Rockliff said.

"The biggest thing for me was how to make a group of people work together for one cause.

"He's all about how you work as one unit and work towards one goal and I think that's the most important thing for us.

"We've got to have 47 players and all coaching staff and the whole football club working for that team first approach."

Rockliff endured a difficult first season in charge and also had to transition from being a teammate to being a respected leader.

"I think I've learnt a lot about myself last year," he said.

"It was one of the most challenging years not only on-field, but off-field for me as well.

"When you're not winning games it make it a lot harder. I learnt so much about the way to handle people and handle situations, and you've just got to find a release.

"I'm a bit of a character, I enjoy having a beer with the boys, so it's a bit challenging at times, but in saying that, I do have a responsibility with such a young group, you've got to set high standards. 

"I've started to play golf a bit more to get away. I find that relaxing and gives me the ability to switch off."
