Lions not dwelling on close losses
Luke Power says the Lions are confident of securing their maiden victory of 2011 this Saturday night.
But Lions star Luke Power said his team refused to play the pity card and instead remains focussed on securing their maiden win this Saturday night against Richmond at the MCG.
Power said while there had been plenty of positives about the way the Lions have been playing in 2011, close enough will never be considered good enough.
“The fact is we’re 0-4,” Power said.
“We could easily be 3-1 right now, but we’re not. We’ve lost some close games and don’t want to get used to that. We want to win footy games, and win them well.”
“Sure it’s frustrating, but what do you do? We just have to man up and get ourselves right for this week’s game,” he said.
“Our focus very quickly shifted to Saturday night’s match against Richmond. You have to move on pretty quickly in footy otherwise you can find yourself getting stuck in the past.”
Power said the team is approaching it’s Round 6 clash at the MCG fresh from playing at the same venue only a couple of weeks ago.
“We played pretty well against Melbourne down there and could’ve won, so we’re confident about our chances this week,” Power said.
“The feeling among the players is good. We’re a tight group and have full trust in our coaching staff and our team-mates. We just have to start putting results on the board.”
One of the key match-ups this Saturday night will see in-form Lions full-back Daniel Merrett lining up against reigning Coleman Medallist Jack Riewoldt who currently sits second on the goal-kicking tally in 2011.
“Daniel has been terrific. I think he’s been one of our best players all year,” Power said of Merrett.
“I’m sure he’ll be priming himself for that job (on Riewoldt) and he’ll do really well.”
“His aggression and the way he’s held things up back there have been fantastic for us. He’s shown great leadership.”
