Sharni Webb was humbled to be voted in by her teammates as Vice-Captain of the Lions AFLW side, the first time she’s held the title and will lead alongside Captain Emma Zielke. She says her promotion to the role is probably down to her caring and inclusive nature.

“I’m the Mum of the team, as some of the girls call me,” Webb told media earlier this morning.

“Zilks has got phenomenal footy smarts on the field and she’s definitely the right person to lead us on game days.

“My strengths probably lie a bit more in the off-field stuff.”

Webb, a teacher at Ambrose Tracey, said she focuses on getting to know her players away from the footy field through hosting BBQs, going for runs and watching sport. Particular emphasis is placed on those new to the Club.

“It’s fun because you get 13 new teammates and 13 new friends at the end of the day,” she said.

“You play better football when you all have a common goal… you can do that easily when you know each other well.

“You get to know each other’s abilities before you rock up for that Day 1 session.”

Webb, like Zielke, has been a member of the Lions team since they were introduced in 2016. The group are dubbed the ‘Foundation Eight.’

“We love this Club and we’re all so happy to be here,” she said.

“I think that’s brought us closer together – our loyalty to the Lions and the Lions have looked after us and we want to give back to the Club and community.”
