Brisbane Lions key defender Kate Lutkins has detailed her excitement at being named in the 2020 Toyota AFL Women’s All-Australian side.
The honour is the 31-year old’s second in her career at the Lions, and she said it was difficult to separate the two.
“Obviously the first time is pretty special” she said.
“This time is pretty surreal given the expansion of the competition and the introduction of those new teams, but I can’t pick a favourite, I’m just really honoured.”
The 2020 Season will go down in history as it was postponed before a Premier could be crowned due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
“Obviously, it was disappointing to have to suspend the season so abruptly”
“But I still really enjoyed the 2020 season and we’re definitely looking forward to getting back into it ahead of 2021.”
Kate and her teammates have been keeping in regular contact since the shutdown was announced and despite being out of season, and with no local football competition to participate in, are committed to remaining fit and healthy through this period.
“We’re keeping in regular contact as a group” she said.
“Our health and fitness is a priority and so whilst we don’t have an official training program at the moment, we’re all doing our bit to stay fit.”
Kate has returned to her full-time role with the Australian Defense Force and is working 5 days a week from home.
The All-Australian team was announced ahead of tonights’ W Awards where the respective AFL Women’s Best and Fairest and the NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star awards will be announced.
The awards will be broadcast from 7:00pm AEST on FOX FOOTY, Kayo, womens.afl, the AFLW App, AFL.com.au and the AFL Live Official App.
