Cubs will learn from Cattery
Lions midfielder Luke Power says his side’s youngsters will use Saturday’s 63-point loss to Geelong as a lesson
Saturday’s game at Skilled Stadium - a venue many now consider footy's hardest road trip - matched a host of Geelong premiership players against a number of raw and developing Lions players.
And rather than shirk the issue, Power said the baptism by fire would provide a great learning tool for the young group.
“Playing here is a great lesson for those younger guys,” Power said.
“It shows them how good they’ve got to be in today’s game and there’s no better example than Geelong when their players are up and firing.
“And while our boys were competitive we realise we’ve got be better.”
As a star of the Lions’ three-time premiership side, Power is the perfect mentor for the burgeoning group of youngsters not well versed in finals success.
“There’s a massive upside to this team,” Power said.
“Guys like (Ryan) Harwood, (James) Polkinghorne, (Aaron) Cornelius, (Jack) Redden, (Tom) Rockliff, (Albert) Proud, (Todd) Banfield - they’ve just got to keep working and we know they’ll improve.”
At the ripe age of 30 and with 257 games under his belt, Power understands he is one of a handful of veterans charged with the job of leaving the club in good shape for when he retires.
“We’ve got a lot of players who have been around a while and have to show direction and leadership,” he said.
“But obviously we’re not imposing ourselves enough or else we’d be winning games and we’re not - we’ve all just got to be better.
“It’s very important at any footy club to have mentors and I’m now one of them.
“It’s the same as the Vosses, the Lappins and the Leppitschs and the like who were such important mentors to me when I first started.”
Power is showing no signs of slowing down, amassing 36 touches in Saturday’s loss, including 14 in the second quarter.
However, the midfield brigade desperately missed the influence of fellow veteran Simon Black, who was out with an ankle injury, and the Lions will be hopeful of regaining his services against Melbourne next Saturday night.
New recruit Brent Staker will also have a nervous wait after being reported for striking Darren Milburn in the third quarter.
