Brisbane Lions defender Matt Maguire is in doubt for this weekend’s clash against Richmond after scans revealed some minor damage to his ankle.

Maguire, 28, was subbed off in the third quarter of last weekend’s match after injuring his right ankle in a collision, with Senior Coach Michael Voss saying he would be assessed over the course of the week.

“He has had scans and it’s only on the minor end of the scale,” Voss said.

“So we’ll catch up with the physios and get the medical report, and find out whether he is a small outside chance for this week.”

Apart from two weeks on the sidelines in Rounds 14-15 with an elbow injury, Maguire has been a pillar in the Lions’ defence in 2012 in the absence of regular full-back Daniel Merrett, who has filled a forward/ruck role for much of the season.

Meanwhile, the Lions were dealt further bad news during their early-week injury assessment, with scans confirming that young midfielder Jared Polec had torn his adductor.

Lions Physical Performance Manager, Brett Burton, told lions.com.au that Polec’s injury came from a tackling incident during the Lions Reserves win over Mt Gravatt on Saturday.

“Unfortunately Jared tore his adductor in the Reserves over the weekend,” Burton said.

“So he’ll miss a period of time which looks to be 4-6 weeks.”
