The Brisbane Lions have been overlooked by the AFL All Australian selectors who named their preliminary 40-man All Australian squad overnight.

The Lions were one of three clubs to not have a single player selected in All Australian squad along with fellow non-finalists Adelaide and Port Adelaide.

It is the first time since the 40-man squads were introduced in 2007 that the Lions have failed to have a representative, but comes as little surprise considering the team finished 13th on the ladder with just seven wins.

Michael Rischitelli would have arguably been the Lions player most likely to come under consideration, however he was up against a deep pool of talent laden midfielders including the likes of Gary Ablett, Dane Swan, Leigh Montagna, Paul Chapman, Chris Judd, Scott Pendlebury, Joel Selwood and co.

The All Australian selectors were not asked to nominate the leading players in each section of the field - forwards, defenders and midfielders / ruckmen - as per recent seasons, but simply to name the best players of the season. However, the final team of 22, to be named on Monday September 13 in Melbourne, is selected to best fit team balance as if to play a match.

The Geelong Cats supplied seven contenders for this year’s side, followed by Collingwood with five and St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs with four each respectively. The squad includes 17 players who have never previously won All Australian selection.

"Selection in the Four’N Twenty All Australian team is recognition for a tremendous year of football, as the best player in your position across the entire competition," AFL CEO Mr Andrew Demetriou said.

"All Australian selection is a great honour also because of the quality of those players you have competed against, to win your spot, and the selectors nominted the 40-best players of the year to highlight the outstanding players who are in contention for selection as one of the elite players of the season," he said.

Four'N Twenty, sponsor of the 2010 AFL All Australian Team, congratulated all 40 nominees on making the list.

Managing Director of Patties Foods, Mr Greg Bourke, said nomination in itself was a significant achievement for players at the highest level of our national game.

"We wish all the nominees well in the final selection of this year's Four'N Twenty AFL All Australian team", Mr Bourke said.

Mr Demetriou also said that selectors Gerard Healy and Robert Walls had today announced they were retiring from the selection panel, and he wished to thank them for the contribution they had made over many seasons.

“Gerard and Robert have applied great rigour to the discussions around selection in the All Australian side, knowing the honour it is for a player to be named in the team of the year, and the AFL is very grateful for their service while on the selection panel,” he said.

For the first time the general public can purchase tickets to the Four’n’Twenty All Australian Awards. Tickets are available from the AFL Event Office; $20 for adults, $15 for AFL/Club members and $10 for Juniors. To book, visit www.afl.com.au/eventoffice
