Lions defender Ash McGrath will miss this Saturday's clash against Geelong after accepting a one match sanction handed down by the Match Review Panel on Monday.

McGrath was charged with a Level One engaging in rough conduct offence against Hawthorn Captain Sam Mitchell during the third quarter of last Saturday's Round 16 clash in Launceston.

The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). The incident received a total of three activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

McGrath's existing bad record of one match suspended within the last three years meant that his penalty was increased by 10 per cent to 137.50 points. He also has 68.75 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 206.25 points and a two-match sanction.

But the 2003 premiership player took an early guilty plea which reduced the sanction by 25 per cent to 154.69 points and a one-match sanction.

Meanwhile, young Lions midfielder Jack Redden also accepted a fine from the Match Review Panel for making contact with an umpire.

Redden was charged with a first offence for making negligent contact with umpire Heath Ryan during the first quarter of last week's match against Hawthorn.

A first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire is an automatic $1200 sanction, although his early plea reduced the sanction by 25 per cent to a $900 fine.
