BRISBANE Lions captain Jonathan Brown has called on his teammates to continue their attacking philosophy ahead of next Sunday’s clash with Geelong at Skilled Stadium.

The Lions were overrun by Collingwood at the Gabba on Friday night and though Brown saw some positives in his side's effort, he said taking the game on was crucial from here.

They kicked just one goal after half time, struggling to combat the Magpies’ ploy of dropping plenty of players behind the ball.

Collingwood kicked eight of the game's last nine goals.

"We really attacked the forward line early in the game and then we got reluctant and we started to back-track," Brown said. "As soon as we started to do that it dried up completely.

"We’re a good side when we really take the game on, force it forward and go to contests in the forward line. That’s probably the message going forward."

Brown (two goals) and fellow forward Daniel Bradshaw were kept quiet as opponents Simon Prestigiacomo and Harry O’Brien put the squeeze on.

Lions coach Michael Voss said he would seek clarification from umpires boss Jeff Gieschen on exactly what defenders were allowed to do when close-checking forwards.

Brown admitted he was frustrated with the treatment at times but said he was happy to "play the ball on its merits and get on with the job".

However, some irritation came from his own boot, kicking five behinds – including one in the third term from two metres out when running into an open goal.

It summed up the Lions' second-half slide, but Brown said it was through no lack of effort.

"I thought we were pretty gallant," he said. "The tackling numbers and all the effort numbers were still very good. I think we were probably in front of Collingwood. I think both sides were tremendous in that, but at the end of the day our ball use really let us down.

"That was partly to do with our composure and partly to do with Collingwood’s pressure, which was terrific.

"I thought no doubt we ran out of steam a bit. We were trying but we were out of juice.

"Last week (against the Sydney Swans) really knocked us around but we should have taken our chances and been further in front."
