Saints wait on injuries
Question marks still surround the fitness of a few of St Kilda's stars
Captain Nick Riewoldt and veteran midfielder Lenny Hayes were both forced to finish last weekend’s match against Geelong on the interchange bench after suffering foot and leg injuries respectively.
According to saints.com.au, Riewoldt and Hayes will be tested this week before St Kilda determines whether they’re fit enough to fly to Brisbane.
Both would prove huge losses for the Saints should they be unable to take their place in the team.
Riewoldt has been in near career-best form this season, averaging more than 17 disposals and nine marks per game this season.
He has also booted a team-high 39 goals – almost twice as many as his next best teammate, Stephen Milne (21).
Hayes, meanwhile, has averaged 23.1 disposals in his 10 matches this season, and continues to be one of the Saints’ prime movers in the midfield.
St Kilda could also be without defender James Gwilt, who was subbed out of their match against Geelong with a knee injury.
Although the extent of Gwilt’s injury is still yet to be determined, St Kilda are unlikely to take any risks with the 26-year-old considering he underwent a full knee reconstruction at the end of 2011.
To compound matters for the Saints, forwards Beau Maister (hamstring) and Justin Koschitzke (calf), and defenders Sam Fisher (toe) and Sam Gilbert (knee) remain sidelined.
The Lions have their own injury concerns, with key playmakers Simon Black (adductor) and Pearce Hanley (hand) already ruled out of Saturday night’s match.
Midfielder Brent Moloney will also be monitored after pulling up sore after last Sunday’s loss to Port Adelaide.
The final Round 19 teams will be released at 6:25pm on Thursday.
