Some of the Brisbane Lions’ selections at the 2012 AFL National Draft have been altered slightly following the distribution of Free Agency compensation picks - although the Club’s prized Pick No.8 remains unchanged.

Under the new Free Agency rule, clubs that lose out-of-contract Free Agents receive compensation from the AFL in the form of draft picks.

For instance, St Kilda were understandably allocated the most generous compensation (Pick No.13) for losing star Brendon Goddard to Essendon, while West Coast received Pick No.62 following Quinten Lynch’s move to Collingwood.

With all compensation picks now finalised, the Lions are set to head into the Draft with selections 8, 24, 33, 55 and 73.

The exact amount of picks used by the Club will depend on the number of senior positions available on the list.

The Lions have already farewelled six players from the senior list - Bryce Retzlaff, Josh Drummond, Amon Buchanan, James Hawksley, Cheynee Stiller and Sam Sheldon - but added one with the off-season recruitment of Brent Moloney.

So, as it currently stands, there are five vacant positions on the senior list.

However, with one week still remaining of the AFL Trade Period and the potential for rookie upgrades, this could change again in the coming weeks.

As a minimum requirement, each club MUST take at least three selections from the National Draft.
