Cricketer Chris Lynn was announced as the Brisbane Lions' newest ambassador today at the GABBA.
Captain Tom Rockliff presented the Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat star with a Lions jumper in front of the media.
“It’s a good honour, I get along with the boys pretty well and they’ve supported me throughout my career. I’m grateful that (through this role) I can support them back," Lynn said.
"We know that the GABBA’s a great place to play cricket, and it's also a great place to play AFL. I encourage all Brisbane fans to get out and ‘Get to The Gabba’ on April 2.”
Lynn said that, while AFL wasn’t his first sport of choice, the friendships he has forged recently with some of the Lions’ playing list, including Rockliff and brothers Dayne and Claye Beams, had motivated his switch to AFL and his support for the Lions.
“I played for Mayne Tigers as a kid and Toombul Cricket Club in the summer.
“Knowing the boys helps a lot. You just want to support them when they support you.
“It doesn’t matter what code it is, I love going to sporting events; watching in the crowd, beer in hand, supporting the lads."
Asked what his role would involve, Lynn joked:
“I’m a good motivational speaker.
“I just really enjoy supporting the lads, that’s what it’s all about.”
One of the most exciting Sheffield Shield seasons in recent years is set for a dramatic last round as the Queensland Bulls host Western Australia at the GABBA tomorrow.
Just six points separate the top four, meaning only WA and Tasmania are out of contention for the final.
“We’ve got the chance to host the Shield final which it’s been a couple of years now since we last did that.
“But if we don’t we’re border line of making the finals.
“It’s going to be a big challenge against the West Australian boys. They’ve got the current ‘Don Bradman’ in Adam Voges back, but our boys are in a really good head space at the moment.
“I know that if we win, the boys are ready to bring home that Shield Final.”
